No, the 4S doesn't do that. I still think it has something to do with the
digital nature of the lightning connector, but I could be wrong.

My I phone 5 will also turn on if I just plug the connector in it and not
plug it to the wall or Mac.  This was not the case for the 4S in IOS5 I
don't think or can't remember.
