Let me explain both of these one by one for you. Hope this helps! For Gmail: Your sim card contacts will be imported to your gmail account that you have signed in with on you iphone. On your iphone: Your sim card contacts will be imported to your iphone local memory. Personally I would like to suggest import your contacts to the gmail, because then they will be available to you globally. Best part is if you change your phone in near future to get all these contacts you just have to sign in with the same gmail accounts and all the contacts will be synchronized to that device automatically.
