I understand the disposable sensors, but what is the disposable transmitter
for? Sounds like one more piece of equipment that you have to keep track of
that the Libre doesn't have. If you could explain what this transmitter
does, it would sure help. Thanks for your in-depth answer and explanation.
It cleared a lot of things up for me.

Dexcom doesn't use NFC; so I don't know why it wouldn't work with iphone's
pre-7.

Operational cost of the dexcom is higher, there's the disposable
sensors(similar to libre) + a transmitter (which is also disposable, but is
good for 3 months if memory serves). I much preferred the Dexcom, but as I'm
paying out of pocket I switched to the Libre (and was grey market importing
the "pro" version from India). I've just started using the miaomiao2, it is
consistently reading lower than the Libre app (ranging from 10 to 20
points); but is more consistent with fingerstick. The miaomiao app (tomato)
may be somewhat accessible (but color me slightly dubious; it seems a bit
unpolished. I haven't tried spike.app (which seems more polished; but one
has to jump over some hoops on a weekly or yearly basis to authenticate.

The Dexcom allows for calibration to match your fingerstick device of
choice, the Libre doesn't. So, if covered by your insurance, I'd go with the
Dexcom.

As for alarms, Dexcom communicates by bluetooth and is in continuous
(well, every 5 min or so) which is why alarms are built into the app.

Libre uses NFC, so if you use their app (or reader) alarms aren't really
practical. If you add the miaomiao, there is the same sort of bluetooth
polling going on (as with the dexcom) so apps such as Tomato and spike can
provide alarms.

The miaomiao is a one time purchase, and is rechargeable (although, over
time the battery will wear out and isn't replaceable).

According to one of my clients, the Dexcom is accessible.

Both types need at least an iPhone 7 because they use the NFC chip that
was introduced starting with the 7.

Their apps make it so a blind person doesn’t need their expensive
stand-alone device to scan the patch.

I think the Freestyle ones last longer but if the app doesn’t have an
alarm, I can see why the doctor is leaning toward the Dexcom.

Though, you may want to double check the specifications for each one to
make sure that feature hasn’t been added.

    Subject: Freestyle Libre or Dexcom?

    Hi all,

Yes, this is very much iPhone related. I have a question about two
glucose readers. One is the Freestyle Libre and the other is the Dexcom. I
know that the Libre app is accessible but I don't know anything about the
Dexcom. My doctor wants me to get the Dexcom because it has alarms and the
Libre does not. The downside of it is that you have to enter in codes every
so often. To me, if it is accessible that doesn't really matter because
there is always Aira or some way to work that out. I also noticed that the
Libre link app does not work on the 6 S. Anyone know why? Or do you have a
customer service number? Does anyone have any answers or where I can go to
find out more? Thanks in advance.
