This started working for me all by itself on my iPhone 11, but I still
had this problem on my iPhone 7, at least until I tried this three
finger swipe up, which did seem to take care of the problem. thanks for
the tip!

three-finger swipe down, and it has said unlocked, and the problem is solved.
Hold the phone in landscape, and do the three-finger swipe down, going from
where dot 1 would be, toward dot three. I am curious to know if this fixes it.
