I haver never used more than a basic thin and light case and have had no issues and I have dropped my current phone and other phones many times. But there are also differences in thin and light cases, some which are a bit more expensive use various thin yet shock absorbing materials and may be better than just your basic cheap TPU (thermo-plastic polyurethane) case.

I am considering going back to my previous case. What do you all think? I'm getting from amazon a lot of accessories for my iPhone that use the lightning connector on my iPhone. I'm getting a couple pairs of earbuds that are wired and connect directly to the lightning port. I've also got a few 3 foot lightning USB cables. I also did pick up a couple of those things that allow me to use a wired pair of headphones with my iPhone if I want.
