Denise, You cannot turn this off. The Mail app is setup as follows. On the left side you will have a list of mailboxes. Once you have opened a mailbox that list becomes the list of messages. The right 2/3rds of the screen is the message content itself. Once you become familiar with this layout, you can make plowing through mail very efficient.
