Just don't hold your finger on the screen for too long and slide to type won't even kick in. You should also be able to turn the rotor and find Slide to type and toggle it off just as you can find "Typing Mode" and set it to touch typing if that is what you use. If I get a new phone that is one of the very first things I do when I get to an edit field since I don't like the standard typing method.
