I never have only numbers show in the Messages app as long as the contact is in my contacts. What I have seen is that if I get a message from somebody who is not in my contacts and I add them from the messages app that it still shows the number after I added them. So far rebooting the phone has fixed this for me every time.

I have no idea why. Most of the time, I get names; but only Apple knows why it doesn’t show the name sometimes. As for entering them and then they are not there, I’m with Diane, maybe you missed the done button? I’ve never entered a contact and had it go missing in the 10 plus years I’ve used Apple devices. I am not sure Siri knows the nick names from the contacts without you telling it once. I do know that Siri has no idea that there is a company field in the contacts. So, don’t ever put a name in the company field and expect Siri to call it. I use the last name field for that. Richard "There's a nap for that." - an anonymous cat in a window in Portland, Oregon. Another time, I added a contact, and when I tried looking for it again a little while later, it wasn’t there. Finally, yesterday a friend called, and I was positive I had added him to my contacts about a month ago. Same deal. It showed his phone number but not his name or anything. Oh, when told Siri to call “Mom”, she just asked, “What is your mother’s name?” I have her as a contact listing her full name and Mom as a nickname. Kind of weird! Any idea what’s going on?
