That sounds like push notification or mail; and I switch that off; I only want mail hwen I want to... not be constently pestered by it. I think you have to dig deep into the setting for the specific mailbox to find that. But start in Settings/mail, blah and whatnot/find the mailbox/ and dig in there, including under advanced.
