If you set up a fingerprint, or two, then you can unlock the phone with a finger print and mostly will not need the passcode except when the phone is rebooted. Go into settings, Touch ID and Passcode, and you will have to enter the passcode, then if you want, you can either add a fingerprint or turn off the passcode.
