I use the Blind Shell Classic, and I definitely recommend it over an iPhone.
It doesn't do as much, and you can't add apps to it, but it works well for

My totally non-techy student needs to replace her phone. An iPhone would be
really difficult for her. Is anyone using a blind shell, or another
accessible easy-to-use smart phone that you could recommend? When I
enquired previously, someone suggested another phone; but my email crashed
