Hi Richard, I had the same problem when I bought my first iPod Touch which was a third Generation back in 2009. I did basically the same as you which is what Apple support wanted me to do. Then I phoned them back and told them it was still going through the battery like crazy and they asked me to send it back and I received a new unit. I wouldn't fool around, just insist on getting a new one since you tried everything.
