Hi Andrew, When I had my iPhone 4 the Home Button worked very poorly and sporatically. This didn't happen right away, it was after about 8 months or so. I literally could not get anything done with it at times and eventually just took the phone to an Apple Store. Of course when I tried to demonstrate it it worked fine, but they took my word for it and gave me a new phone.
There is a fairly simple procedure which is supposed to fix the Home Key in some cases, but I can't remember the steps and don't have time to look it up right now. You can google "Fixing Home Button on iPhone" or something like that and I know it's been discussed on here maybe a year or so ago, so the archives might produce something.
