If it’s an iphone then there is find my ipHone which she can log in to via the web browser on a computer,
If it’s an android, There is a simplar product called (from memory) find my droid, Either tool can let you remotely connect to the device either sounding an alerm, Sending a message to it or remotely wiping the device so it’s not useable by anyone else. The android find my droid, I’m not sure of the details these daysbut there must be something on the net that your friend can check out. Good luck to her.
