I have a number of Bluetooth and wired headphoens Including the airpods second gen and the airpods pro, And they work fine when the phone is locked.

I usually lock my iPhone when listening to audio books. I'm thinking of getting a set of anker earbuds. Anker makes some great products which don't cost to much, but work very well. I also like wearing headphones and don't usually wear ear buds, but if I'm out and about, it would be easier if I stuck some ear buds in my pocket.
