Subject: Re: configuring an iphone for a new user

Hi,

Here are a few settings I adjust when doing initial IOS training. Once the
student has an initial knowledge, I alter some of these. I am referring to IOS
14.x here.

1. Turn on "Do Not DisturB". This will prevent notifications from disturbing
the class. If your phone also had cell service, it would prevent phone calls
from disturbing you as well.

Settings / Do Not Disturb

2. Turn off "Autolock" by setting it to "never". This prevents the student's
phone from locking every few minutes while in the class.

Settings / Display & Brightness / Autolock

Note - you may want to reset these two items after the class if the student
will be taking the phone away with them.

3. If the student is a Voiceover-only user, turn on the "screen curtain" to
save some battery usage.

3-finger tripple tap

4. If Voiceover is being used, make sure "hints" are turned on.

Settings / Accessibility / Voiceover / Verbosity / Speak hints

5. If Voiceover is being used, set the Voiceover volume so both the instructor
and the student can hear it. If in an area where you need to be quiet, consider
using a splitter so two sets of earpods or headphones can be used at the same
time.

Volume buttons or add "volume" to the rotor

6. Set SIRI options to display its responses and your spoken inputs. This will
help the student while learning to use SIRI.

Settings / SIRI & Search / SIRI Responses

7. If cell service is available, set the phone option to use "full screen" for
calls. This avoids the difficulties for beginners in dealing with the one-line
display mode on calls.

Settings / Phone / Incoming calls

8. Initially, set typing style to "standard" when working with the on-screen
keyboard. Once the student is comfortable with the on-screen keyboard you can
introduce the other typing styles.

Settings / Accessibility / Voiceover / typing / typing style

There are likely other settings one could adjust. Much depends on the model of
phone, the IOS version, the usage the student will make of the phone, and their
current level of knowledge / skill with it.

I’d like to alter settings that would make the learning experience as
stress-free as possible. I have already turned off pass code. I have also
turned off raise to wake. I was going to lock orientation but can’t find the
setting in IOS 14. Can anyone suggest further steps I could take to accomplish
my goal? Thanks.
