Hi Casey, I leave the Verizon versus aT&T debate up to you Americans as I am in Canada. I have been using my cell phone as my home phone for years, ever since I got on a plan which gave me unlimited incoming airtime. I have had an iPhone 4 from 2010 to 2011 and bought my 4S last October, so it's been iPhone for me for 2 years now and at this point I can't see myself trying anything else in the forseeable future because nothing offers the same high level of accessibility. Having said this, battery life can be something that goes anywhere from a day by which I mean morning to evening to 2 days, it really depends on how much you use your phone, do you always have WiFi on etc. I use my phone a lot by which I mean probably about 6 to 8 hours a day which includes phone calls, emails, other apps and a lot of listening to Audible books in the evening, early morning as I get ready to go to work and usually while I am walking to work. I very comfortably get 12 to 18 hours out of my phone which in practice means I usually plug it in when I go to bed and unplug it in the morning. I find this very acceptable and I'd easily get away with charging the phone every second day if I bought an iPod to use as a companion device for listening to books etc. I also have my WiFi on all the time and not having it on makes quite a big difference, but I have a Sonos system and you have to be on the same WiFi as it so I typically don't bother turning it off and on.
Lastly, whether this works for you as a home phone solution depends a lot on what plan you have. I am now with Koodo which is owned by Telus and uses the Telus network, but for $55 a months I get completely unlimited calling Canada wide (no air time, no long distance) as well as unlimited texting, call display and voice mail. 2 Gigs of data is $25, but since I typically only use 100 to 300 Meg I do better with their Flex Data Plan which slides from $5 to $15 depending on how much I use, I think it's $15 a months if I'm above 100 and below 300 and usually I only pay $10 a months for the data I use because both at my business and at home I am on WiFi. I also supplement this with Skype which I use both at home, at work and on my iPhone for Skype-to-Skype calls and Skype-to-Phone Calls. The Unlimited North America subscription is only about $30 or $31 a year if you pay for the year and I find that well worth it since I have my Line 3 at my business hooked into a Skype WiFi adapter and can simply pick up that line on any of the phones on my phone system and dial out just as I would on a regular line. When it comes down to it it's a matter of doing the math to figure out what you are paying now and what you would pay maybe by upgrading your plan a bit but saving other monthly fees for your Voip or landline.
