Go into settings, Notification Center, and turn off notifications, either by
app, or overall.
You can turn off sounds, and just have them as a banner, so they don't grab
your attention.

There are several options in there to explore.

Or, just mute the phone or as you say, turn on do not disturb.

Subject: How to quiet notifications

Hello; I'm wondering if there's a way to quite notifications other than turning
on do not disturb. They can be very bothersome when one is working on other
applications in the iPhone. Thank you very much.
