It is hard to know how to describe the position the headphones need to be in. They have to be positioned just right. Try taking them off and putting them back on in as straight up and down position as you can. I'll try again later; they are on the charger right now.

I do have the feature turned on, accomplished by going into Bluetooth, finding the AirPods max, flicking down to more info and double tapping, and going through the settings there.
