Hi Kay, Um, No, do not disturb did not have a feature that turned it on when you locked your phone in IOS 14 or earlier.
However you could schedule your dnd to lock at set times unlock etc And when you locked it That would then put the notification on the top of the screen that said do not disturb was on, Otherwise when you had your phone open the DND icon was on the status bar / line at the top of the screen. But because you were using your phone it didn’t appear to have dnd on but it would have been. I use dnd all the time and this is how it’s always worked for me. What you can do is to have Do Not Disturb on and to set it so that when your phone is unlocked you are getting notifications and such and that is still there under Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb.
