I eventually ended up performing an alternative scan of my face, but even before that, I didn’t have trouble using face ID with or without sun glasses on.

Then the only time you’ll need to passcode your phone is when wearing a mask. I’ve never gotten face recognition with a mask. Hats kinda throw it for a loop as well. If you use sunglasses you are allowed 2 versions of your face, as long as you use your natural face first. Accuracy is a good 95% when you raise your phone for access. Egun On, Lagunak!
