Yes, you can turn off iMessage, or simply make sure both iMessage and Send as SMS are on. That way, if you are texting someone with an apple device, it will go as an iMessage. If you are texting someone with an Android device, or, when iMessage is not available for some reason, it will go as a regular text message.
