I just do it in the middle of the back, right in the heart of my case. I have a pretty low profile case, but it is soft, so it might be absorbing enough of the impact to throw off the reliability of this gesture.
I just tried tapping the lens, and it was much more reliable. Actually, tapping any where near the top back of the phone, even on the case, turns out to be much more reliable then tapping in the middle or the lower half of the back. Once I discovered this, I also realized the tapping can be much lighter as well. Thanks a lot for the tip! I also seldom use them because they are not as reliable or as quick as other screen gestures. Instead, I have customized my gestures so a four finger tap goes to the app switcher and a four finger double tap goes home. I find these much easier to use than the backtap or the new slide from the bottom gesture used by phones without a home button. I encourage everyone to go to Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Commands, All commands and get familiar with how extensively these can be customized. You can pretty much set up your phone to work in the way that best suits you.
