Hi,

I've had this trouble for ages now. One work around is to double tap the "More"
tab and then access devices from there.

Often I have another problem with her app, that VO only speaks through the
phone's speaker, whether using BT headphones, or speakers.

The only way around this obstacle that I have found is to use wired headphones,
or something else such as a speaker connected to that same headphone jack.

Accessibility issue with the Alexa app:

Don Breda <[email protected]>: Jan 07 06:34AM -0500

Hi listers,

I wanted to add a speaker to a group I previously created in the Alexa
app a long time ago.

I found I was unable to do that.

When going to the devices tab I now get a screen that says introducing
favorites and I can't find a way to get rid of it or do anying with it
at all.

This prevents me from working with my devices and speaker groups.

Has anyone found a way around this?

I did try the pass through gesture with no luck and the amazon website
doesn't have the alexa control interface as it used to.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Don

Donna Casteen <[email protected]>: Jan 07 05:34AM -0700

You didn't say which phone that you have; is it possible that screen
recognition is turned on? Or that screen recognition needs to be turned on to
help you to be able to navigate to whatever is preventing you from being able
to use the app. I am not having any trouble using the alexa app. & I seem to
recall having to use screen recognition just long enough to be able to get past
the problem, then turn screen recognition off.

Hi Don,

We had the very same issue on our 12 Pro Max’s, and despite asking Amazon how
to get round it, without any help, we discovered that there is an ok button at
the bottom of the screen, but with voice over on, try as we might, we could not
access it, so I just turned voice over off, and got a sighted person to tap the
button, and the screen disappeared.

Hope this helps.

James.

Don:

I encountered the same thing. There is a button at the bottom of the page, but
voice over does not announce it.

The only way around this for me was to get sighted help. Turn off voice over
and have a sighted person tap the button that closes the page. I can’t remember
the name of the button though.

<[email protected]>: Jan 07 11:20AM -0500

Don, I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, there is a button
that you have to tap to get past this screen which is totally inaccessible with
VoiceOver. I had to have my sighted wife tap on it to get past it. You can’t
help but wonder if Amazon does any accessibility testing when making changes.

"Mike B." <[email protected]>: Jan 07 09:03AM -0800

Hi Don,

Below are 3 different ways to get rid of this screen:

Read all the way through before attempting any of the options below just to
kind of get your head wrapped around what to do.

The 1st 2 ways of getting rid of this screen, 1 requires sight and the
other requires turning Hands Free on and then off. These steps are
using an SE 2020 iPhone running iOS15.2 and with a Home button.

#1, If using sight :
When you open the A'Lady app and double tap the Devices tab a screen called,
Introducing Favorites, shows up and there isn't a way to get rid of that
using
Voiceover since voiceover can't read the, Got It, button.
So, if you have sighted assistance available, open the app and double tab
the devices tab to bring up the Introducing Favorites screen, now turn off
Voiceover.
Have the sighted person tap the, Got It button, 1 time and the screen
disappears for good.
With a little luck a blind person can do this as well, but it'll possibly
take a few tries. Open the app and double tap the devices tab to bring up
the
Introducing
Favorites screen, now turn Voiceover off.
>From the top of the, Home button, move up with 1 finger one half an inch to
1 inch, this is the approximate location of the Got It button, and tap 1
time
with 1 finger. Now turn Voiceover on to see if you got lucky.

#2, this is how I got rid of the Introducing Favorites screen using
Voiceover & Hands Free, kinda sorta:
Open the Amazon Alexa app and choose the More tab from the tabs at the
bottom, it's to the right of the Devices tab.

Go to the top left and swipe right to, Settings, and open this.

Go to the top left, swipe right to, Alexa App Settings, and open this.

Go to the top left, swipe right to,Enable Alexa Hands-Free, and single
finger double tap it. You probably won't hear anything after double tapping
, so
double tap it again and you should hear Voiceover report On or Off.

Turn this On and play around with the hands free functionality for a couple
of minutes, and go back in and turn hands free off. Now reboot your phone.

This is not a guarantee, but this is how I got rid of the Introducing
Favorites screen. It was by accident that I happened upon this , but what
the hell,
as long as it worked who gives a crap! LOL LOL

#3: Using Screen Recognition:

From: Tamika Polk
This is what I did,

Go to settings, go to accessibility, go to VoiceOver, go to VoiceOver
Recognition, turn on screen recognition.
“Your iPhone will automatically make apps more accessible by recognizing
items on the screen.”
Open the A Lady app,
Open theDevices tab and use the rotor to go to screen recognition, if it is
off swipe down, it will say on. Then you can find the got it button and tap
it. Then go back to the rotor find screen recognition and turn it off.
Thanks,
Mrs. Tamika Polk-Davis

Stay safe and take care. Mike.

Are you using metric or imperial measurements?
I use a different weather app here in British Columbia, Canada, but I just
opened the stock Weather app and temperatures are being read correctly, I use
the SIRI Voice 4 United States.
I sure hope you do mean 1 degree Fahrenheit when you say you get extremely cold
temperatures, that would be about -16 or -17 Celsius and where I live we have
barely seen anything that warm in 4 weeks; on Christmas morning it was -36
Celsius here which is -33 Fahrenheit and factoring in wind chill we often had
it below -40. By the way, for those who don't know, at -40 Celsius and
Fahrenheit are the same.
I'm glad I don't live in Northeastern BC where the rest of my family is because
there it went down to -48 Celsius or -54 Fahrenheit and that is actual
temperature without wind chill.

Considering where I live in the extremely cold temperatures that we get here,
most of you would never experience this bug.

However, when I open the weather app on my iPhone 8 and the temperature is at
1° it is red as "X 31°."

To complicate matters further, this does not happen with the Alex voice.
However, I prefer to use Sarah (enhanced), when I switched to Susan and Ava
this also occurred. I wonder if anyone from Apple monitors this email list? If
not, I suppose I should report this bug.

Bill Gallik <[email protected]>: Jan 06 10:19PM -0600

Oh boy, I could write a dissertation on this subject; but never fear I will
restrain myself.

First, I think it’s worth noting that 5 Centigrade degrees is equivalent to 9
Fahrenheit degrees. 1 degree Centigrade is the same as 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees -
let’s say 2F degrees for simplicity’s sake. And, I will further elaborate. I
should note I have a very dear friend in Peterborough ON. with whom I
frequently converse, often sharing weather stats so I’ve made it a point to
familiarize with the conversions between C and F.

In pursuing this exercise, I stumbled on what I view as a remarkable
relationship between Centigrade and Fahrenheit, what I refer to as the
“Goldilocks Range.” While developing a spreadsheet to learn the temperature
equivalents, I discovered the range from 16C/61F through 28C/82F have the
phenomenon that the boundary temps are inverted digits; 16 is roughly the same
as 61 and 28 and 82 are likewise nearly equal. I realize that some might
consider 16C/61F through 28C/82F not an ideal “Goldilocks Temperature Range,”
but I submit these temps should be reasonable boundaries to that range for the
sake of mathematical discussion. I will say this was the first step in my
better understanding the two scales. It’s just too bad that Fahrenheit has that
darn 32F as the freezing point, that tends to complicate straight-forward
conversions. But on the other hand, if not for that 32F degree glitch, the
inverted temps would no longer apply.

As I mentioned earlier, every 5 degrees C is exactly equal to each 9 degrees F,
each degree C is thusly exactly equal to 1.8 degrees F. As such, 1C degree is
1.8F degrees.

And then, of course, and so much more important in the far northern latitudes,
there’s exact equality at -40 degrees - no matter which scale is employed,
BRRRRRR!

I certainly hope this has not been too tedious a read, obviously I’m quite
enthralled with the entire matter. And, if I may say, I’m now able to convert
between the two scales on the fly with a snap. That’s something I achieved for
the sake of my Peterborough pal! (Smiles)

I switch between C and F regularly, I suspect my prior message will shed quite
a bit of light on my fettish for this topic.

The problem I exposed only occurs at 1F or -1F and then only with select
voices. This bug does not manifest with the Alex voice.

I have verified if this bug shows up when the temp is 1C or -1C, I’ll have to
check that out and report back. So far though, I’ve only noticed it when using
the Fahrenheit scale (41, 31, 21, etc.).

But it sounds like what you are saying is that a temperature of 1 °C = to 1.8°F
and that is not correct since you have to add 32 to that, so 1°C = 33.8°F.
Of course knowing that 0°C (the freezing point) is 32°F is useful and that 20°C
= 68°F, you can use the 5°C = 9°F method to figure out what 5, 10, 15 or 25°C
would be, but the actual conversion formula for any value is this:

Fahrenheit to Celsius
Temperature in degrees Fahrenheit less 32, then multiply that result by 9 and
divide it by 5
Example For the temperature of 68°F:
68 minus 32 = 36, multiply that by 5 and you get 180, finally divide that by 9
and you get 20

Celsius to Fahrenheit
Temperature in degrees Celsius multiplied by 9, divide the result by 5 and
finally add 32
Example For the temperature of 20°C:
20 times 9 = 180, divide that by 5 and you get 36, finally add 32 and you are
back to 68

Of course I rarely do this any more since I usually have an Alexa or Google
Home speaker nearby and all I have to do is ask either one to convert anything
I want and if I am out and about I either have my iPhone with me or my Apple
Watch on my wrist and I can ask Siri.
This morning it is -23C° here and asking Google or Siri to convert it is much
quicker than to multiply by 9 which ends up with -207, then dividing that by 5
which = -41.4 and adding 32 which gives me the final result of -9.4°F.
Similarly using your method, Bill, and starting from the knowledge that 0°F =
-17.8°C is also not an easy mental calculation, I would have to start with the
difference between -17.8 and my actual temperature of -23 which is -5.2, then I
would have to multiply that by your value of 1.8. I can of course use -5 for
simplicity instead of -5.2 and multiplying 1.8 by 5 is of course easy because
multiply it by 10 and you get -18 so half of that gives you -9 which is close
enough to the accurate result of -9.4.

Subject: Re: Temperature Mispronunciation

(Smiles)

 voiceover speech and bluetooth speakers

While you are at the subject of bluetooth speakers, have any of you used the
apple home pod mini? What do you think of it, and how does it compare to other
bluetooth speakers?

The Homepod Mini to my knowledge is not a Bluetooth speaker but uses
Airplay to receive any stream from the iPhone and of course it has its own
connectivity to the Wi-Fi and it can do many things by itself like fulfill
Siri commands, play music etc.

I'm glad this topic has come up. I have a Google Home, which is similar to the
Amazon Alexa, and I thought I might be able to play my music and Audible books
using our Google Home via blue tooth, but the speaker isn't showing up on the
options in the Blue Tooth app. Does this mean I can't use the speaker in this
way?

The google home doesn't work any more with bluetooth. I bought myself
a fourth generation echo and it works so much better with bluetooth.
I can listen to audible books from the audible app on my phone, and
things like audio dramas sound very good through my echo. The
problems the google home has with bluetooth, is one reason why I
bought my fourth generation echo. I also got a great deal on it. It
was originally $100 and I got it for $60. The sound on my echo is
great as well.

If you want to listen to Audible content on an Alexa speaker there is really no
need to use it as a Bluetooth speaker for your iPhone. Amazon owns Audible so
all you have to do is say to Alexa "Alexa, play such and such book on Audible".
While the book is playing you can ask to go back a chapter or go forward a
chapter, to rewind 3 minutes or go forward 2 minutes, to Pause and Play again
etc.

Speak screen no longer plays when phone is locked. 15.2 iOS

Pete Nalda <[email protected]>: Jan 07 06:56AM -0600

I used to use speech screen over voiceover because I could have it read
continuously even when the phone was locked. This is not the case. I’m not sure
if it goes to the next page automatically or not I will have to verify this.
*update!** speak screen will still turn the page automatically and will keep
reading even when app is in the background. Lock that screen though and the
reading stops. I think you used to read even when the phone was locked

 iPad in portrait or landscape

Dean Martineau <[email protected]>: Jan 07 06:22AM -0500

I have acquired an iPad, mostly for learning it so as to be able to
instruct others. With the iPhone I've always preferred locking orientation
to portrait, and haven't found a reason to use landscape. I'm open to other
viewpoints on orientation preferences and advantages for the iPhone, but
I'm especially wondering if there are sound reasons to keep the iPad in
landscape orientation, or use it that way in some circumstances. So I would
appreciate any experienced views..

Thom Spittle <[email protected]>: Jan 07 07:03AM -0500

I Dean,
The only observations I have are more with your students more than you. If your
student is low vision, they may like the larger size of youtube videos when in
landscape mode. Otherwise, the only difference I see is that the keyboard has
larger keys in landscape mode, which some user like better.

Looking forward to hearig other people’s opinions.
