Bev:

You could try downloading 'Seeing AI'. It is a free app for iPhone and has a product recognize channel. Open the app and flick up to you hear 'product' announced. Then scan the bar code. There will be a series of beeps and the closer you get to the whole bar code, the beeps will increase in speed. When the bar code is recognized, you will hear a musical set of notes and then the info will read out.

The bar code is usually at the bottom left of the can label seam.
Seeing AI has a 'short text'' channel, which is the first one that comes up when you open the app, and it may be able to read the prescription info.

Also, for the prescription info, you might try 'be my eyes' , if you have it, or 'AIRA, if you have that app.
