Think of a password manager like a physical safe. Let’s assume you write all
your website addresses with corresponding user names and passwords on little
index cards and you put these index cards in a box inside a safe. Your safe of
course has let’s say a 6-digit keypad code.
In this case the 6-digit code to open the safe would be your password manager’s
master password, once you opened the safe (or the password manager) you can
then get to your index cards which have the login information of your
newspaper, your bank, maybe of Applevis, Amazon, Audible etc. In the case of
your physical comparison you select say the index card for Amazon where it says
the address is www.amazon.com<http://www.amazon.com> and then it has your user
Id (most likely your email address) and your password. You then proceed to type
this in. With a password manager you also select the Amazon card, but of course
it’s not a physical index card but an entry in your password manager. Once
selected your password manager automatically goes to Am azon.com, fills in your
email address and password and logs you in.

To add to Nimer’s excellent points, you might also review Consumer Reports
digital article on How to Use a Password Manager found here:

https://www.consumerreports.org/password-managers/how-to-use-a-password-manager-a7687059222/

I’ve been a big fan of Consumer Reports print magazine from back in my sighted
days but I’m less familiar with the digital version. I suspect the above link
doesn’t include the complete text of the article available to subscribers but
it does include some very good points and is worth reading. I believe their
choice for Password Managers is 1Password.

Hello Joe,

The idea of a password manager is that you have one program which remembers and
signs you into your apps and websites. That program has many features, but the
most fundamental is that of remembering passwords and autofilling them when
needed. Password managers can generate new passwords to input into your apps
and sites, and it is recommended highly that each site or app has both a
different password, and two-factor authentication, which a password manager can
also help you with.

To get started, you can install and set up an account with 1password or
LastPass. If you have passwords saved in your browsers, you can import them
into the password manager. If not, when you log into a site, you will be
prompted to have the password manager remember that password for you. Password
managers use browser extensions to interface between the password manager and
your browser, and there are extensions for Chrome and Edge for both 1Password
and LastPass.

Thanks.

Good morning,

I’m still having trouble with the idea of a password manager. If I decide to
use LastPass or 1 Password they tell me I only have to remember one password.
That’s a good thing. I definitely have more passwords than I can keep straight.
But, how does that work? Do I have to re-sign in to everyone of the sites I
connect with that has a user name and a password? What about the two newspapers
I read that have my wife’s user name and password, will I end up changing her
password? I use MS Edge for some web sites and Google Chrome for others, does
that matter?

Does anyone know of a web site that explains this kind of thing? Thanks for
your help. Sorry if I’m being slow witted here.

Joe
