It's been a while since I had a Fitbit, but although the device itself wasn't accessible, I could do a lot with the device and the app. I had the Fitbit Charge HR, so it would track my steps, monitor my sleeping and automatically determine when I was exercising. I could check on all of this through the app. I could also hit the button on the side of the Fitbit to start and stop a work out. Although I couldn't read messages or notifications on it, I would get alarms for things like messages, reminders and meetings, which would be enough to know I needed to check my phone or my computer. I could also set alarms on the app to have the Fitbit go off. This was nice for a wake up alarm, since I could set it up as a silent alarm, which would wake me up but not bother my wife.
Of course, you could do all of these things on your Apple Watch, but at the time, that cost three times what the Fitbit Charge cost. I had a problem with my Fitbit Charge right after it went out of warranty, so I replaced it with a Ticwatch, and Android watch. The Ticwatch was only a bit more expensive than the Fitbit Charge, but it was more accessible although didn't have all of the features like sleep monitoring. I also couldn't really use it for a wake up alarm, since it was bigger and couldn't hold a charge all day. I did end up treating myself to an Apple Watch when we started coming out of the lock down.
