I believe you also get some things with a subscription Microsoft 365 that you won't get when you purchase the desktop apps, such 1TB of storage in One Drive. Seems like you also get more functionality out of the apps on your phone as well. Of course, if this isn't important to you then it doesn't need to figure into your decision. Having all of my documents on my PC in One Drive and then being able to access them from my phone, has been a big help on multiple occasions.
