Kind of annoying, though I never send audio text messages, but this seems like an extra step that shouldn't be needed. If you have the Apps hidden, flick left from the message text to the Apps icon and triple tap. Now, below the text and before the keyboard are all the app icons. Audio for me is I think the third one. Triple tap that apps button again to hide all that clutter.
