The iPhone 12 is a 5G device, the first 5G iPhone. Carriers, including
mine, will not allow a SIM card assigned to a 4G device to use the 5G
frequencies or the many additional frequencies of the 12. Carriers do
this because newer iPhones support many more frequencies than older
iPhones and carriers do not want the newer iPhones hogging the limited
frequencies and bandwidth only available to older iPhones. This is
called network management. I learned about all of this when I ordered
an iPhone 12 Mini and was sent a regular size iPhone 12. I was using
an iPhone 7 at the time. I tried to return the 12 but was told the
phone had to be activated first. This deactivated the SIM in my iPhone
7 and the cell phone store put the SIM from my 12 into my 7, which was
a big mistake. Eventually, the cell phone store had to contact network
control at the carrier to learn why my 12 could not be accepted for a
return by the computer system. The returned phone had to have the
original SIM because it was coded as a 5G SIM and a new SIM had to be
installed in my 7 coded to the 4G network. So my 7 was deactivated
again and I went to the cell phone store to swap SIM’s.
