I personally wouldn't like doing that; I then have no way of knowing whether or not it's really recording until I'm all done and then I have to either get speech turned on again before I stop the recording or wait for the automation to kick in. I have two suggestions.
1. Sometimes I find that "stop" is said before the recording actually starts; otherwise I just leave it there. 2. The other thing you can do is dial your phone number from that phone and get into the messaging system that way instead of doing it with visual voicemail on your phone. You'll be asked for your password first before you can get into the voicemail system (at least on Verizon and sprint; I don't know about others) so you may want to either hold the phone away from you or use earphones.
