That can be said for many so-called “smart” things. You can get a perfectly good deadbolt for your front door for $50 or something like that yet people including me spend $200 or $300 for a smart lock. To each their own, our smoke alarms at my retail store connect via Zigby or some such thing to the Alarm.com panel I have and they are very inexpensive. I haven’t even checked lately if any other company apart from Nest/Google has something like it, but there must be something out there other than the old Nest ones..

Google is phasing out the Nest app in favour of the Google Home app and apparently it is finally end of life for these. I also have some newer Nest cams and a Nest doorbell which will continue to work so I will have to decide if I want to stay in that ecosystem and buy whatever new cameras Google has at the time or if I should use this opportunity to switch to something like maybe the Arlo system from Netgear or Ring, there are many good systems out there now. You could check the status of the battery, be notified when the device needs to be replaced, perform an self test and get notified when the alarm goes off even if you aren’t at home.
