What are you using as your client? I believe Apple Mail, Google Mail and Outlook apps can all support gmail, and then of course you could be using the web page. Sorry, but not quite enough information. Gmail does call its folders “labels” because instead of considering a set of folders that one can drop mail into where each message is independent in every folder, Gmail u has only one grouping of messages (found in All Mail or sometimes archive folder in services that communicate with Gmail via the IMAP protocol. It then labels to each message like “Inbox” or “Sent”.
