Thanks to you all, I think the volume is fixed. After adding volume to the rotor (with your help) flicking up on the screen caused VO to announce rising volume percentages- but the proximity sensor did not seem very much improved. But then using the phone's volume up button did seem to make the proximity sensor kick back in. Have not been able to use the phone as a speaker phone since the update.
