Sorry, yes, you do need a device which is an Apple Home Hub for the Homekit integration to work so either an Apple TV I think it has to be 4th Generation, a Homepod (not sure which models qualify) or an iPad. I often read that the Apple TV is your best option. However, Homekey does work without, we had a planned power outage yesterday which lasted from 7 AM to 5 PM and when we came back from a walk I of course couldn’t use Siri to unlock the door so I unlocked my iPhone and as soon as I held it up to the lock it unlocked even though there was no power.

Same works with my iPhone, but of course the iPhone has to be unlocked first. You can also ask Siri to unlock it and the app works OK as far as setting up codes for guests or maybe you have an electrician or plumber coming between 8 and 9 on Wednesday, you could set up a code for them and make it so it only works during that time on that particular day; I think you can also designate codes to work only once. Of course you could always ask them to call when they are at your door and you can then remotely unlock the door for them. There are of course other locks which have all or most of these features, Apple Homekey is not quite as common, but there are more and more locks which support it as well.
