Good that you got that. When I was looking into Android, I thought that the Pixel was really good, so I hope people jump at your offer on them.

For carriers to still lock phones is pretty antiquated and I just don't understand the reasoning. If you buy the phone on a contract where you pay a monthly amount for two years to pay the phone off means you already have a contract so what's the point to lock the phone. I am really glad that the CRTC here in Canada, I believe that is a little bit like the FCC in the US, has put an end to SIM locking and was already on December 1, 2017, so almost 7 years ago. I didn't want to buy a new iPhone 16 or 16 Pro from my carrier here which is Telus, either. An iPhone 16 Pro 128 Gb would have cost me $42.50 a months for 24 months and then if I wanted to keep the phone after that, I would have had to pay a $470 buy-out fee. If you add that all up, it's $1,490 and I can buy a brand new iPhone 16 Pro 128 Gb at the Apple Store for $1,449 Canadian, $40 less than the Telus offer. Of course they say that I could pay monthly and all that, but if I add the monthly cost of the $470 buy-out fee over 24 months, it is just under $20 which means if I add this to the $42.50 monthly cost, I am paying a bit over $62 and that again is exactly the same as Apple's price if I buy the phone on a monthly plan from them except on the Apple Store site they are upfront about it and say that this means a 7.9% interest fee. Anyways, after I was persistent about not wanting a new iPhone, the agent I spoke with said she could still offer me a new and better plan. I have a Telus business account with 4 phones on it and I pay $65 a month per phone which includes unlimited calling and texting in Canada and 55 Gb of 5G data. The new plan she told me was exactly the same $65, but it would include free calls and texts to Canada, the US and Mexico and data was 250 Gb and it also included 1000 international minutes pretty much to any country in the world. It was of course not difficult to make the decision to upgrade to that plan and lock it in for 2 years, then she told me that I could also get a Google Pixel 8 128 Gb phone for free with that plan as well as a Telus Smart Hub I could, for example, use as backup should my fiber internet go down. I said that while I am not an Android user, I would of course not say no, and I expected to receive 1 google Pixel 8 phone and the hub, instead yesterday I received my package and it included 4 Google Pixel 8 phones, one for each line on my plan, and the hub. When I checked online, these phones which are now last year's Pixel model with google having released the Pixel 9 this year, still go for $679 at Best Buy and I think Walmart had them for $655. I left all 4 phones in their boxes so they are entirely new and unopened and I will try to sell them for $550 assuming most people may offer me $500. But that is still $2,000 which is more than the iPhone 16 Pro 128 Gb I am looking to buy costs. All in all I always read Canada has some of the highest costs for cell plans, but sometimes you also get an unexpected bonus. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Joseph Hudson Sent: Tuesday, September 24, 2024 2:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Purchasing a phone from Apple rather than from your carrier pluses and minuses Hi mary, I've purchased phones that are going to be connected to the carrier and I'm also purchased unlocked phones. However, any phones that I've purchased, from Apple directly, I have just done it all unlocked and either put in my Sim card or activated the eSIM. There's not really any parks other than if your phone has any value to it they'll put it towards the cost of the new one. I hope that explains everything. > On Sep 24, 2024, at 4:44 PM, Mary Otten <[email protected]> wrote: > > Hi all. > I have always gotten my phones through my carrier.
