Most of the time you're reading a QR code out in the wild like on a sign, plackard, poster, ... Sometimes you'll get a QR code displayed on a a device like when you're setting up an authenticator app. When I've had to do this I've used my phone to scan a code displayed on my laptop. It beats the manual method where you need to type in dozens of numbers.
