Flor, I want to thank you for pointing out the utility of screen recognition under the correct circumstances. Your workaround for YouTube is much appreciated and really helps me enjoy my videos again now that I can increase the speed. And I think you bring up a very good point about how we need to learn to activate screen recognition where there are environments that do not seem accessible. Unfortunately, I think we’re going to see more situations like this as accessibility teams are trimmed down in companies. This is the first time I have used screen recognition to successfully deal with otherwise inaccessible parts of an app. And you are right, the important thing is to turn it off when it is not necessary because it can add possibly unwanted or unneeded complexity and verbiage when it’s function is left on but not really needed. Thanks again for introducing me to this feature of voiceover that I had not previously explored.

I've found a possible solution, after all.

I'm new to Screen Recognition.

(Judicious use of Screen Recognition is key.)

[The former 25% jumps are still there in the YouTube Playback Speed Settings, , as well as the newer 5% jumps - though I haven't got those latter to work accessibly yet.]

Now first, if you haven't already loded it, locate Screen Recognition in Accessibility | VoiceOver, and double-tap on it. By default, it is off. You can select an app to apply it to.

(I'm open to correction on this, but, as far as I know, Screen Recognition will now be available as an option in the Rotor for apps you haven't selected, also.

However, If you prefer it for now,  navigate your list of apps and - when you find it - double-tap on YouTube to select YouTube.

(But now that I know about it, I'd recommend not having Screen Recognition on in YouTube, until you're in the right place  to find the playback speeds slider - the 25% slider you can find in the old way, once you've activated the actions button and the 1x button in a video that you're playing.

So NOW, at this point, turn on Screen Recognition. The 0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, and 2.x buttons are apparent and can be activated with double-tap, etc. The playback speed will change according to the speed you have selected.

Additional NOTE: If you were to maintaine Screen Recognition throughout while you're browsing your video in YouTube, You will see a lot of screen clutter, including chats, comments, etc. It's not perfect OCR, either. But it's good enough to get the gist of chat comments, as well as ads getting in the way if you're not a YouTube Premium subscriber. Thus, it's difficult to navigate with Screen Recognition on universally throughout the YouTube experience. .

I have just now posted to [email protected] on this matter. I would suggest that others interested do similar, or contact YouTube if they can.

It may be a YouTube thing; but I have requested Accessibility to either work this issue out or work with the YouTube app developers to do so.

There has been a change implemented, as of late 2024 up to now, as outlined in the details behind what follows here. I don't know if it's accessible to VoiceOver at all yet, though (or if it ever will be). Moving the speed slider in 25% chunks on our VO-modified screens is more feasible than the 5% slider movements available now.

Did YouTube remove playback speed?
The norm on YouTube before this update was a selection of speeds in increments of 25%, between . 25x and 2x. The new slider keeps this range but allows
for 5% increments (for example, 1x, 1.05x, 1.1x, and so on.) Playback speed slider on YouTube.12 Dec 2024

Yes, and also, when I go to send a comment on a video, it throws me out of the app all the time. The speed thing is really a bummer because I listen to a lot of slowpoke creators and I always kick up their speed as much as possible. I have tried to submit feedback, but the feedback form seems inaccessible.

I have YouTube Premium and using an iPhone SE 2nd gen. Until yesterday I was able to speed up playback. Then I suddenly found in the speed adjustment dialogue the only choice was 1X. I rebooted with no change. I removed and redownloaded YouTube and it temporarily fixed the issue and I had other options for speed selections. Then, it reverted back to 1X after a couple video viewings. I again removed and again downloaded YouTube with the same result – temporary fix and then reverting back to 1X as the only option.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? If so, has anyone figured out a permanent solution?

Thanks,

Jeff
