That worked for me. I remember that wasn't the case with my iPod touch 4th
generation earlier, but I may be wrong.

Yes, only four apps are shown at a time in the app switcher. It has always
worked this way. Use three finger horizontal swipes to cycle through the
pages in the app switcher.
