I've pushed for turning off slide to type ever since it came along.

I also turn off predictive text.

I find both rather annoying.

They might be fine for non VoiceOver users, but they are just distracting.

Yes, and turning off slide to type is equally important although that is also
controlled by that same time delay, e.g. both alternative character
announcement/availabilability and slide to type kicks in after whatever delay
you set there.

Sieghard,

Thank you for this.

I had not dug that deeply, but the time delay is a perfect solution for folks
dealing with this kind of typing issue.

I will add this information to my notes to remember to share with others as
needed.

Rina, if you have difficulties with hearing alternative characters available,
try the following:

First, make sure “slide to type” is turned off. Do this as follows:

Go to Settings > General > keyboard

Swipe right across a bunch of options until you hear this:

Slide to type, if it is On, double tap on it to turn it off, this will prevent
slide to type to activate.

Slide to type is a little bit like the old Flicktype keyboard which was around
years ago where you would simply slide your finger to the approximate location
of each letter and iOS then predicts the word you want to type and as soon as
you hear the word, you lift your finger and it is inserted. I haven’t tried it
for a while and I don’t know if this has become more useful on iPhones with
Apple Intelligence, but I would definitely recommend to turn it off.

There is also another setting right afterwards, it is called “Character
Preview”, you can safely turn that off as well, not sure if it makes much of a
difference as it seems to be primarily a visual thing, but it won’t hurt to
turn it off.

What this does is that it shows a larger image of the letter your finger is on
and I guess for sighted people this can be useful, but it’s not important if
you use Voiceover.

Second, increase the time delay until alternative characters are displayed. You
can’t turn off alternative characters completely, at least I don’t think you
can, but if you don’t need them, you could increase the time to something like
2 or 3 seconds and this should essentially prevent them from ever becoming an
issue since it is unlikely you will hold your finger on a single letter for
that long. You find this settings here:

Settings > Accessibility > Voiceover > Typing > Keyboard Interaction Time (it
is also somewhat down the list, after Rotor and Activities)

Once you double tap on “Typing”, then Keyboard Interaction time is the last
item, double tap on it and then find the “Increment” button and double tap on
it, it will increase the time by 0.2 seconds each time you double tap it.

I have set mine to 1.6 seconds, can’t remember what the default is, but I just
tried and you can decrease it all the way to 0 seconds and increase it all the
way to 4 seconds.

Best regards,

Sieghard

A new note is a good way to do this.

If you hold your finger too long on any given letter, that is when you will
hear about alternative characters available, etc.

So, if you touch a letter, and it isn't the one you want, immediately slide
your finger until you hear the letter you want and lift your finger.

That does take practice.

But even if you hear alternative characters available and don't slide your
finger, when you lift your finger, the letter that was originally spoken will
be entered.

Subject: Question about typing

Hello,

I use touch typing and I keep having too much problems to type. My main problem
is that instead of hearing the letter I type I also hear lots of other sings,
such as alternative characters, different sounds, etc.

What can I do?

What is the best way to practice typing? I use a new note, but perhaps there
are a better way.

Any suggestion, please?

Rena
