Richard, I have never attempted to double tap near 8, 10, 4 or 2, but I would say for me it works 95% of the time on the first try as long as the watch is locked of course. One thing I have not tried and don’t know is whether the always on setting makes a difference. Since I don’t benefit from it, I have it diasabled.

Actually, silent mode does not have to be active, but the chances are you will get spoken time on the first try and then get haptic time. And, the hold business is for people not using VoiceOver. A one finger double tap kind of around where 8, 10, 2, or 4 would be on a clockface works. If you first cover the face with a hand, then do the one finger double tap it seems to work a little better, but the reality is, it is not consistent. You could just mute VoiceOver with the three finger double tap and just attempt the haptic time single finger double tap to get haptic time without having it speak when you don't want it to.
