Well, good news & bad. On the iPhone after doing a select all I did move selected items to the trash & was able to do a delete all. Unfortunately this resulted in a number of emails in the inbox on my computer getting deleted too. It is odd because many emails in the inbox on the computer were left alone but many are now gone. And of course some of the ones that are now gone are ones I wanted to save. I thought my actions on the iPhone would only impact the mail folder there but apparently not.
Another odd thing - selecting mailboxes on the iPhone then all mail says there are over 19,000 unread emails. But only 2 pages of emails show up. I let the app sit open for a while thinking it might just take a while to load all those emails but still just 2 pages. Sigh. Maybe I'll just go ahead & delete the mail app on the phone after all.
