Peter, I too have always loved Braille, but have been fortunate enough to have displays to work with. However, when I'm not near one of my displays, I love the Braille Screen Input option for writing. I'm glad you were able to work out your problem with it, though I haven't figured out exactly what that screen about Braille input and output actually does to enhance the option for Braille input.
