I made this witch a couple months ago and am getting better at it. I did not map any special gestures, but do use Siri if I’m getting frustrated. You can ask Siri to go to the home screen or to open a certain app. Sometimes I think I am trying to do the swipe up gesture too quickly. I agree that it just doesn’t’ feel as reliable as the home button for me either, but I’m seeing progress.
