I don't see why you should need an Apple TV if your new speakers support
AirPlay.
When you connect up the new speakers to your wifi network you'll be able to
stream audio from your Mac and/or iDevices like the iPhone etc to your AirPlay
speakers.
I'm a happy owner of an Apple TV myself but I bought it to get AirPlay on my
hifi-system.
I only use it for audio.
