My experience is similar to Sieghard's. It eventually does work most of the time; why any one try is more successful than another is a mystery.
The second thing to remember is that the label doesn't seem to transfer. If I move an app or put it in a folder the label sometimes goes away. Yes, the process is buggy, but it does work and it is definitely worth giving it a try. The trick is to keep labeling the button if the label doesn't stick the first time. I have had success after repeating the labeling process 3 or 4 times, if it doesn't work after 5 tries I usually give up, but I would say it works more often than not.
