Hallo Martin,
SayText has limitations, but if you only want to read a single sheet of
printed text, such as a letter, it will work for you. I just tried it out in a
room with bad lighting and SayText enabled, automatically, its flash, something
that Prizmo is bad at doing. I got an acceptable OCR of the letter, with some
errors, but enough, certainly, to give me the gist of the contents. Often, I
can get perfect results with SayText, but will say this: SayText can be a bit
hit and miss, it takes quite a while to process and so, if you get a bad
result, you get more frustrated, because you have to go through the whole
process again and it takes time. prizmo is faster, but costs and is less easy
to use, in the sense that SayText has the most simple interface of all the OCR
Apps.
Now, most importantly, you said that nothing happened, this was probably
because you hadn't lifted the phone high enough above the paper. I must stress
that it is important, while learning to use these apps, that you try with
something simple, such as a single sheet of printed paper and not something
like a paperback book, plus, of course I am sure you know, none of these app
will read hand writing yet. Wiht SayText, you have to lift the phone, keeping
it completely horizontal, to a height of about 18 inches. This is because
SayText has to see all the edges of the paper before it will take the shot for
you. So, if you are standing at a table, standing being the best way to do
this, lift the phone to about mid chest height, just as a sort of average. hold
the phone still and, hopefully, you will heart beeps and then the shutter sound
of the camera, SayText will do the reast until you hear something like "OCR
complete" or some such thing, then do a two finger flick down and your result,
which may be bad at first, will be read to you.
If it is at all possible, SayText is one of those apps worth having a
friend with some sight by you just to get the feel of the need for height, to
make sure that SayText is seeing the edhges and that you are holding the phone
nice a horizontal, but if this is not possible, just keep practising, try to
get the thing to beep and take the shot, even if the results are terrible, all
this is part of the learning curve.
Good luck, you are embarking on one of th3e most tricky aspects of using
the iPhone, but it pay off dividends if you can manage it!
Sandy.
