I employed a poor choice of words, the coins do not represent lives, more like play tokens, since dying requires you to start over. The option to buy the guns is there if you don't want to grind through the same levels to earn enough gold to get the guns, which would entail going through the same waves of enemies many, many times, and you'll still experience the games challenge, just more expeditiously. It's a value proposition many so called "freemium" games offer, letting you play the game and enjoy it without paying for anything, but offering something to players who support the developer. I've done it enough to earn about 30,000 gold, but I can easily see people valuing their free time more than I do. :) I think a new level is denoted by a pause in the action, that may or may not include the girl calling for help and running to you.
