I've had a talking thermostat for 6 or 7 years now. It has 4 variations plus a
weekend schedule. Just because we can isn't always a good reason to do it.
That's fine if you travel often but how many blind people do you know who spend
more time on the road then at home? We own a motor home and travel often but
this app isn't necessary IMHO.

  I appreciate the responses.

The internet thermostat sounds interesting, but just over a year ago, I
invested in a talking one, so I'm not ready to leap that direction.

I read about the belkin on Amazon, and it received really mixed reviews. In
fact, most of the options I read on Amazon got mixed reviews. Kind of makes
this more challenging.

Lol, maybe I'll shelf this idea for later, and purchase the simple light
timers.

It all sounds pretty cool though.

What a great thread. I knew someone who had tried WeMo some time back who
said the app had significant accessibility issues. This info is not
particularly current by app standards, so it would be great to hear from anyone
who's had a play recently.

I hadn’t. It’s a system by Belkin which is driven by an app. I have no
idea if it’s accessible or anything else.

Here’s the link to the app:

      https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wemo/id511376996?mt=8

      And, here’s the itunes description:

      Description

App controls the WeMo Switch and WeMo Motion.

The iPhone home remote. Control stuff in your home – from anywhere.

      Introducing WeMo.

Belkin’s new WeMo system is a family of simple, ingenious products that
use your iPhone and your home Wi-Fi® network to connect you to the things and
people you love. WeMo is your home at your fingertips.

WeMo can control just about anything.

With WeMo you can turn on a light from another room, or turn it off from
across town. You can put your home on a schedule—living room lights go on in
the evening, kids’ TV goes off at bedtime. You can check to make sure you
turned the iron off, after you’ve already left. WeMo Switch is the iPhone home
remote.

      The Complete WeMo System.

The WeMo App runs on your iPhone and controls any electronic device you
plug into a WeMo Switch—if you can plug it in, you can turn it on or off with
WeMo. And WeMo Motion lets you control the devices when motion is detected.
Have the floor lamp go on when you enter the living room, and turn off when you
leave.

WeMo Switch and WeMo Motion are available at major retailers.

The WeMo family of products is great at automating repetitive tasks, and
at allowing you to control your household in ways you’d never thought possible.

The beauty of WeMo is it’s completely modular. You can control as much or
as little of your home as you like. Control one light, one room, or the whole
house. There’s no limit to what WeMo can do. If you can think of it, you can
probably do it with WeMo. WeMo is your home at your fingertips.

      Hi all,

Has anyone explored controlling lights & appliances with their iDevices?

At first, I went searching for the old-fashion plug-in light timers, but
then I got curious about this.

If anyone has direct experience with apps/products, please share your
findings here.

      Thank you,
