I think you will find in any case where sliding your finger doesn't get what you want, flicking will. The advantage to flicking is that it jumps from item to item and skips the dead space. Sometimes the buttons are physically very small and it is easy to slide right by them. Glad you found it. I have a tendency to not use the flick method, but just run my finger over the screen to find what I want. That usually works.
